Why a Short-Term Rental Business Mindset is Your Secret to Freedom
“Are we here to play golf, or are we here to eff around?” That’s what my copy editor says to me when we’re working on the marketing side of my business, and she’s about to get real with me. She doesn’t like golf. She doesn’t know anything about it either. But a friend of hers heard it on a TV show and said it to her, and now she uses it, and it gets me into the right mindset. It gets me into a short-term rental business mindset.
So, I’m gonna ask you: “Are you here to play golf, or are you here to eff around?” Yup, we’re about to have a “real talk” moment. Most women I meet in this industry started their journey because they wanted more – more time with their kids, more financial flexibility, and more freedom to live big. But somewhere between the midnight guest messages and the frantic search for a backup cleaner, that dream turned into a demanding, 24/7 job. If you feel like you’re drowning in the day-to-day, it’s likely because you’ve fallen into the “Chief Everything Officer” trap. To get your life back, you have to shift into a short-term rental business mindset.
The Trap of the “Chief Everything Officer”
Now, look, I totally get it. When you’re first starting out, it’s tempting to do it all. You want control. You want things to be perfect. What if nobody else gets your vision? And let’s not even talk about how much it costs to hire the right people to bring that vision to life.
You end up being the interior designer, the guest communications lead, the maintenance coordinator, and the accountant. Girl, I see you. Your hustle is admirable. But it isn’t sustainable. In fact, staying stuck in the “worker bee” role is the fastest way to burnout.
Furthermore, when you’re deep in the intricacies of your operations, you can’t see anything clearly. You lose the ability to think strategically because you’re too busy reacting with a capital R. Consequently, your growth plateaus. To break through the constant workload, you must stop treating your rentals like a hobby and start treating them like a high-level enterprise.
Adopting a Short-Term Rental Business Mindset
So, what does this shift actually look like? It starts with your mind. You have to make a fundamental change in how you view your role. I like to say that CEO should actually stand for Chief Empowerment Officer. Your job isn’t to do every task; your job is to empower systems and people to do them for you.
When you cultivate a short-term rental business mindset, you begin to value your time as your most precious asset. You realize that spending three hours researching the cheapest bath towels isn’t a “win”, it’s a distraction from the high-level moves that actually move the needle on your revenue.
Identify Your “Genius Zone”
How to Lead with an STR Business Mindset
To successfully scale, you need to identify your “Genius Zone.” This is the space where your unique superpowers meet the needs of your business. For instance, maybe you’re an absolute rockstar at analyzing data and finding new deals, but you find guest messaging draining.
If that’s the case, your short-term rental business mindset should tell you to delegate the messaging immediately. According to leadership experts at Harvard Business Review, effective delegation is one of the most important skills for any leader to master. By offloading tasks that fall outside your genius zone, you create the mental “white space” needed to innovate and scale.
Reverse Engineer Your Life
Remember, we aren’t just building a portfolio; we are building a life. I am a firm believer in reverse-engineering your business. Instead of fitting your life around your rentals, we build a business that fits the life you want to lead.
That means setting boundaries, implementing robust automations, and trusting your “Dream Team” to handle the details. When you operate from this place of leadership, you aren’t just an “owner” – you’re a visionary. You’re no longer trading your soul for a booking; you’re building a legacy.
Your Path to Mastery
Transitioning from the “hustle” to the “lead” isn’t something that happens overnight. It requires support, the right tools, and a community of women who are walking the same path. You don’t have to figure it out by yourself, and you certainly don’t have to do it alone.
And I just want to stop here and say that I really and truly mean that. I see you. I’ve been you. I can help you. And I want to.
If you’re ready to step out of the “Chief Everything Officer” role and into your power, I’m here to help you bridge that gap. Inside our community, we focus on the systems and the shifts that turn a stressful job into a thriving, automated business.
